With favorable weather conditions prevailing, the dredging and hydraulic engineering work off the Hanhikivi peninsula has started. The work, commissioned by Titan-2, is being carried out by Terramare Oy. This hydraulic engineering work is part of the plant supplier’s total contract and includes the dredging and hydraulic engineering work for the harbor, the sea route, and the back-up intake channel for cooling water.
The work is starting with dredging and excavation on the west and northwest side of the Hanhikivi peninsula. Dredging masses will be moved to the marine spoil area about 10 kilometers west of the Hanhikivi peninsula.
The work in the water area is being done under two water permits issued by the Regional State Administrative Agency of Northern Finland. The water permits include provisions for performing the hydraulic engineering work, for fishing industry payments, for compensation to fishermen and water area owners, and for monitoring during the hydraulic engineering.
The dredging and hydraulic engineering will cause water turbidity and noise, which will be continuously measured. Dredging work will be done 24/7 when the sea is not frozen. Giving consideration to the fish spawning season, blasting work will be conducted from May 20th to October 10th.
The work will employ a maximum of 100 people. The bulk of the hydraulic engineering and harbor construction work will be done starting in 2017.
