This is one of the key elements of the passive safety of the NPP. The work was carried out on the dome of the reactor building and became part of preparing the power unit for transition to the pre-start stage.
The system was installed in stages. Deflector, heat exchangers, electromagnetic devices and other elements were installed at the facility – totally about 90 pieces of equipment and civil structures. At the final stage, the specialists installed the air ducts and concreted the floor slabs.
The PHRS is designed to remove heat from the reactor core in case of a complete plant blackout. The system operates due to natural air circulation and does not require external energy sources: air enters the heat exchangers, heats up and is discharged into the atmosphere through air ducts. This solution makes it possible to passively cool the reactor compartment.
The completion of the system installation was one of the key stages in preparing power unit 1 for start-up.
