The core catcher, or corium collecting and cooling device, is one of the most complex and high-tech elements of the safety system of NPPs with VVER-1200 type reactors. The structural design of the equipment is a metal case weighing more than 150 tons which includes special internal elements: a distribution grid and absorbing mass. They ensure reliable collection and cooling of the corium under any NPP operation scenarios, preventing decay fragments from escaping outside the containment.

Installation of process equipment for units No. 3-No. 4 of the first NPP in Egypt is carried out jointly by specialists of Mechanical Assembly Department and Mechanization Department of the TITAN-2 Egyptian branch.

Leonid Kostyuchenko, Head of Mechanical Assembly Department of JSC CONCERN TITAN-2 Branch in Cairo, commented on the Unit No. 4 construction milestone of the year: "The core catcher installation process consists of several key stages. First, the site and base are prepared: thorough geodetic works are carried out, special levelling concrete is laid, and the base is leveled. Next, our colleagues from Mechanization Department organize delivery from the warehouse directly to the construction site of the El Dabaa NPP unit No. 4, where the core catcher case is installed with the use of modern crane ZOOMLION ZCC32000. The next stage will be the assembly of the core catcher, with general construction operations continued at the same time on unit No. 4.

The El Dabaa NPP construction project is implemented in accordance with intergovernmental agreements between Russia and Egypt. The NPP will consist of four power units with VVER-1200 type reactors. The equipment is installed using advanced technologies and methods, including 3D modeling and digital documentation, which helps minimize errors and optimize construction time.

Thousands of specialists, including engineers, fitters, welders and others, work simultaneously at the construction site. The TITAN-2 Holding pays special attention to compliance with international quality and safety standards, which is confirmed by regular inspections and strict control at all stages of work.

For information:

The TITAN-2 Holding is a Russian group of companies that builds nuclear facilities. Organisations of the Holding perform the whole cycle of works, from development of basic design documentation to facility commissioning.

The TITAN-2 Holding is the general contractor for construction of the new power units of the Leningrad NPP. At the construction site, the organisations of the Holding perform all civil construction, installation, and electric installation works.

The Holding participates in the construction of Akkuyu NPP in Turkey, Paks II NPP in Hungary and El-Dabaa NPP in Egypt.
