Dry protection of the reactor shell

CJSC NPO “Petropromsevis”, a subcontract organization, is now carrying out drying of "dry" protection of the reactor shell. "Dry" protection belongs to the main equipment of the reactor shaft and is a steel cylinder with double walls, weighing 144 tons, ready assembled with concrete.


While in operation, "dry" protection will carry out functions of radiation and thermal screen in relation to ordinary concrete of the shaft. Inter-shell space of the cylinder is filled with concrete which keeps the moisture well, has high radiation resistance and effectively enables to weaken streams of neutrons outside of the reactor shaft. Drying of concrete is carried out at the of the temperature of 250 °С.
After completion of the drying process, works on installation of "dry" protection, thermal insulation of cylindrical part of the shell and supporting truss will start.
